Background of the Study
The protection of journalists' rights is fundamental to a thriving democracy, ensuring that media practitioners can perform their duties without fear of harassment, censorship, or violence. In Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State, the implementation of media laws has been both a safeguard and a constraint for journalists. While laws such as the Nigerian Press Council Act and Freedom of Information Act provide frameworks for protecting press freedom, enforcement gaps and legal ambiguities often expose journalists to risks. Recent studies highlight the growing challenges faced by journalists, including threats to safety, arbitrary arrests, and legal intimidation, which undermine their ability to report objectively (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023; Bello, 2024). This study evaluates the effectiveness of media laws in protecting journalists' rights in Lokoja, focusing on the balance between legal protections and practical realities.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite existing media laws, journalists in Lokoja often face violations of their rights, ranging from physical assaults to legal harassment. The lack of effective enforcement mechanisms and the misuse of media laws to suppress dissent hinder the protection of journalists, thereby threatening press freedom and democratic governance (Okafor et al., 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). This study explores these issues, identifying gaps in media laws and their implications for journalists' rights.
